Solutions For Here & Now
Scania’s new PHEV driveline uses proven technology to give coach operators a new way to reduce emissions.
As revealed at Busworld Europe in October, Scania has been playing a waiting game when it comes to the zero-emission segment in Britain.
Now, with it’s cards all lined up, we have the prospect not just of an electric coach and bus platform but also a plug-in hybrid
too, an option which will no doubt be welcomed by the many coach operators who want to do their bit to reduce emissions but for whom a coach without an internal combustion engine simply isn’t viable right now.
The demonstration PHEV model at Busworld proved popular with those taking test rides aboard; its ability to operate silently and emissions-free in city centres and urban areas, supported by a diesel engine for situations requiring more power, speed or distance, provides an excellent half-way situation.
The new electric platform, launching in the UK with Caetano eLevante bodywork, offers a range of up to 600km whilst maintaining a luggage area that Scania says is almost on a par with that of combustion-powered coaches, making it suitable for medium-distance inter-city routes and private hires. The platform offers adaptability in terms of the e-machine output, with up to 330kW, while the installed energy storage is up to 534kWh.
“With the launch of the new highfloor BEV platform, Scania is not only introducing our first battery-electric coaches but also reinforcing our position as a trusted partner in the transition to sustainable transport,”
Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania Carl-Johan Lööf.
“We believe that the various features offered by this new platform will address coach and bus operators’ concerns about combining zero-emission operations with the needs of urban and travel assignments, making it an ideal solution for the electrification of this growing market in people transport.”
Meanwhile, Scania’s new powertrain platform, based on the Super truck engine, comes in both internal combustion and plug-in hybrid configurations for buses and coaches. The plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) variant offers an excellent alternative for customers who are aiming for exceptional cost and carbon emission reductions, outstanding operational flexibility to meet zero-emission zone requirements,
and the provision of a premium customer experience in their long-distance operations. Thanks to its use in HGVs, Scania already has data to back up claims of 8% fuel and emission savings too.
With its integrated e-machine and six-speed powershift gearbox, the PHEV can run in four different modes: electric, hybrid, charge sustain and forced charging, and has a range on battery power alone of up to 80 kilometres.
“Our new combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains are shining examples of Scania’s twin commitment to sustainability and profitability for bus and coach customers,” says Carl-Johan. “With these new powertrains, we will be able to provide long-distance bus and coach operators with incredibly competitive solutions, regardless of their specific needs or which particular challenges they face, meeting both their current and future business needs.”
